It's 2026, and the robot vacuum market belongs to two Chinese powerhouses: Ecovacs and Roborock. With iRobot's bankruptcy fresh in the rearview mirror, these two companies are battling for your home with models that vacuum, mop, self-clean, and navigate using AI. So which one should you buy?

๐ข The Two Giants
Ecovacs Robotics was founded in 1998 by Qian Dongqi as an OEM vacuum manufacturer (TEK Electrical Company). It rebranded in 2006 and launched the Deebot line in 2007. By 2013, it controlled over 60% of the Chinese robot vacuum market and had grown to a market cap exceeding $6 billion. Beyond Deebot, the company makes the WINBOT (window cleaner) and ATMOBOT (air purifier). It's also the parent company of Tineco, the popular cordless vacuum brand.
Roborock is the younger challenger, founded in 2014 in Beijing with backing from Xiaomi. It raised $640 million in its 2020 IPO on Shanghai's STAR Market. Its S-series launched in 2018 with LiDAR + AI camera navigation and quickly won over Western consumers through ReactiveAI technology (LiDAR + RGB camera + neural processor). In 2023, the company also entered the washing machine market with the Zeo One.

๐จ Suction vs Real-World Cleaning
The Roborock Saros 10 boasts 22,000 Pa of suction versus 18,000 Pa for the Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni. But raw suction numbers don't tell the whole story. Here are the PCMag lab test results:
| Cleaning Test | Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni | Roborock Saros 10 |
|---|---|---|
| Rice on carpet | 99.99% ๐ | 98.6% |
| Sand on carpet | 37.7% | 40.7% ๐ |
| Rice on hardwood | 90% | 95.1% ๐ |
| Sand on hardwood | 82.25% ๐ | 82.8% |
The results are remarkably close. Roborock edges ahead on sand-in-carpet and rice-on-hardwood, while Ecovacs wins rice-on-carpet. The difference? Negligible. Both clean exceptionally well โ the sand-on-carpet issue (hovering around 37โ40%) is a shared weakness across all robot vacuums.
๐งญ Navigation & AI
Ecovacs: AIVI 3D
LiDAR (210ยฐ FOV, up to 10 meters) combined with an AI camera and TrueDetect 3D structured light. Recognizes and avoids obstacles using AI. The built-in Yiko voice assistant accepts commands and supports Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant.
Roborock: StarSight / Retractable LiDAR
The Saros 10 introduces a retractable LiDAR periscope โ the sensor retracts into the body so the robot can fit under low furniture (just 3.7 cm when retracted). AI camera + Rocky built-in voice assistant. Also features a security camera with pet finder mode.
Both use LiDAR + AI camera, but with different philosophies. Ecovacs relies on TrueDetect 3D (structured light) for precise obstacle detection, while Roborock bets on its retractable LiDAR that lets the vacuum reach under couches and beds โ where most dust actually collects. The Saros 10 can also climb obstacles up to 4 cm using AdaptiLift, compared to just 2 cm for the Ecovacs.
๐งน Mopping: Where the Real Battle Is
The biggest difference between these two rivals comes down to mopping. And here, Ecovacs wins convincingly.
Ecovacs: Ozmo Roller
The X8 Pro Omni features the Ozmo Roller โ a rotating mop roller (200 RPM) with 4,000 Pa of downward pressure, 16 water nozzles, and a self-cleaning mechanism. Co-developed with Tineco. The result: mopping performance that rivals a manual mop.
Roborock: VibraRise 4.0
Roborock uses VibraRise 4.0 โ vibrating at 4,000 times per minute with an extending edge mop. Effective, but not in the same league as the roller system. The pad lifts automatically on carpet, but the overall cleaning pressure and depth fall short.
In mopping tests, the Ecovacs X8 Pro Omni tackles dried stains, sauce, and juice residue significantly better than any spinning-pad system. The Ozmo Roller is, at this point, the best mopping system available on any robot vacuum.
๐ Docking Station
Docking stations have become just as important as the robot itself. Both offer:
Shared Dock Features
- Auto dust emptying into bags (up to 90 days)
- Hot water mop washing
- Hot air drying
- Auto detergent dispensing
- Self-cleaning dock base
The difference: Roborock's Saros 10 washes with water up to 80ยฐC (the hottest on the market), while the Ecovacs tops out at 75ยฐC. Both dry with hot air (~60ยฐC), preventing mold and bacteria. In practice, both docks are exceptional โ you won't need to touch the vacuum for weeks at a time.
๐ Security & Privacy
Here's where things get interesting. At the 32nd DEF CON security conference (2024), researchers demonstrated serious vulnerabilities in Ecovacs products โ attackers could remotely activate the camera and microphone through unsecured Bluetooth connections. Ecovacs didn't acknowledge the issue before publication and initially refused to release security patches (TechCrunch, August 2024).
On the other hand, Roborock has stated that its devices do not store or upload images to the cloud โ all captured images are deleted immediately after processing (according to ZDNet). This is a meaningful advantage for Roborock, especially in the wake of the iRobot-Scale AI privacy scandal.
๐ฅ Dreame: The Third Contender
No robot vacuum comparison is complete without mentioning Dreame. The Dreame X30 Ultra (and its successor, the X40 Ultra) competes with both:
The Dreame stands out with its auto-removable mop pad โ when it detects carpet, it drops the mop at the dock and continues vacuuming only. The MopExtend feature reaches 1.57โณ under furniture edges. If you want the absolute best hardwood cleaning (94.7% sand pickup is industry-leading), the Dreame deserves a serious look.
