🦍 What Is Gorilla Tag
Gorilla Tag is a free-to-play VR multiplayer game where players control legless gorillas — affectionately called “monkes.” Movement relies entirely on your hands: you push yourself off surfaces, climb rocks, jump by pressing your hands against the ground, and grab with the grip button. There's no joystick — your movement in the virtual world is determined entirely by the physical motion of your hands.
The art style is deliberately low-poly, inspired by indie games and first-PlayStation-era graphics. There's no start menu, no tutorial. This isn't an oversight — creator Kerestell “Lemming” Smith consciously chose this philosophy so players feel immediately immersed. The game runs on the Unity engine and is available on Meta Quest, SteamVR, and PlayStation VR2.
🎮 How It's Played
Players join lobbies across multiple environments — Forest, Cave, Canyon and more — and choose a game mode. There are four main modes:
Casual Mode: No competition. Just run, climb, explore, and hang out. Perfect for beginners.
Infection Mode: A random player becomes a “Lava Monke” and must tag others to convert them. The game ends when everyone's a Lava Monke. Classic tag on steroids.
Hunt Mode: Each player has a specific target via a “hunt watch.” If you're caught, you become an Ice Monke — faster, but you can only slow down the hunters. Ends when only two hunters remain.
Paintbrawl: Team-based — orange vs. blue. Each team fires paint with slingshots. Three hits (three balloons on your back) mean elimination, but you can keep shooting opponents to slow them down.
More recent modes include Super Infection (Halloween 2025) and Monke Blocks (returned November 2024). Voice chat is enabled by default, and cosmetics (hats, colors, etc.) are purchased with Shiny Rocks — an in-game currency earned through daily logins or in-app purchases.
📈 The Story Behind the Success
Kerestell Smith (known as LemmingVR) started the prototype in December 2019 as a solo project. He was an active Echo Arena (Ready at Dawn) player, even competing in esports events, and was struck by the zero-gravity mechanic — how it created a sense of internal logic and immersion. That inspired his own movement system.
The hand-based locomotion idea came from Raccoon Lagoon by Hidden Path, where avatars reach torso height. A friend of Smith's, watching the result, remarked that the movement looked like a gorilla — and the aesthetic was born. By January 2020, he had a working movement prototype, with the tag concept arriving months later.
The game entered early access in February 2021 via SideQuest/SteamVR, and hit Quest's App Lab in March. In August 2022, Smith founded the studio Another Axiom with David Yee and David Neubelt. The official launch came on December 15, 2022 on the Quest Store, January 1, 2023 on Steam, and November 8, 2024 on PlayStation VR2 — with Vice calling it PSVR2's “killer app.”
The most impressive part? No substantive marketing was ever done. Publicity came exclusively through word of mouth and social media. By June 2024, Gorilla Tag videos on TikTok had accumulated 10 billion views. Active communities formed on YouTube, Reddit, and Discord.
📊 Gorilla Tag by the Numbers (June 2024)
- 10 million total players
- $100 million lifetime revenue
- 90,000 concurrent players (peak)
- 3 million monthly active users
- 1 million daily active players
- ~60 minutes average session time
- 110,000+ Quest Store reviews
- 10 billion TikTok views
🌍 Why It's Addictive — The “Generation Alpha” Phenomenon
GameSpot's Mark Delaney described Gorilla Tag as the “preferred virtual hangout” of Generation Alpha — kids between 7 and 14 who make up the game's core audience. The “pick up and play” philosophy with no complex menus or tutorials, free access, and natural hand-based movement creates a uniquely addictive gameplay loop.
The community extends well beyond the game itself. Organized leagues with monetary prizes already exist. The Monke Map Loader mod enables custom maps inspired by real locations or other games. Fan-made “ghost” creepypastas spread online — stories about mysterious players who play eerie sounds or display hacking abilities.
The game's popularity also spawned numerous clones. SideQuest stopped accepting new clone submissions in 2022, while Meta delisted dozens of clones from the Horizon Store in October 2025. The success led the Another Axiom team to grow to over 100 people, pushing updates every few weeks.
🏆 Reviews and Awards
Critics consistently highlight the “deceptively simple” nature of the gameplay. PC Gamer called it “easy to toy with but tricky to master.” UploadVR awarded it Best Competitive Multiplayer 2021, praising its innovation on tag and physical immersion. Android Central recognized the “physics-based simplicity” but noted the “poor” graphics and some player toxicity. TechRadar appreciated the focus on simple fun over winning or losing.
On the Quest Store, it surpassed Beat Saber as the game with the most user reviews (November 2022), and by January 2023 was the most popular game on the entire store — a massive achievement for an indie title.
"VR's success is inevitable. Gorilla Tag is proof that you don't need a triple-A budget — you need a great core mechanic."
📱 Platforms and Access
Gorilla Tag is completely free (free-to-play) with in-app purchases only for cosmetic items. It's available on:
- Meta Quest (Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest 3S) — the most popular platform
- SteamVR — for PC VR headsets (Valve Index, HTC Vive, etc.)
- PlayStation VR2 — since November 8, 2024
Getting into VR through a Meta Quest 3S ($299) + Gorilla Tag (free) is arguably the most affordable entry into VR gaming available today. If you're looking to understand why so many people are excited about VR, there's no easier — or cheaper — way than this. Just be warned: once you start, it's hard to stop.
