📅 February 16, 2026 ⏱️ 5 min read
Bungie is going back to its roots. Marathon is the first game in the franchise since Marathon Infinity in 1996 — a full 30 years later. But this time it's not a single-player FPS but an extraction shooter. Launching March 5, 2026 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S with full cross-play and cross-save.

What Is Marathon?

Marathon is a first-person extraction shooter that is exclusively multiplayer, developed by Bungie — now a Sony subsidiary. Under the direction of Joe Ziegler, over 300 developers worked to bring to life a sci-fi universe set on the planet Tau Ceti IV in the year 2893.

Players are “Runners” — cybernetically enhanced humans who deploy into constantly shifting environments, search for loot, and attempt to extract before being eliminated. If extraction fails, you permanently lose your items — the risk is real.

Key Details

  • Developer/Publisher: Bungie (Sony subsidiary)
  • Director: Joe Ziegler
  • Release: March 5, 2026
  • Platforms: PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S
  • Genre: First-Person Extraction Shooter (Multiplayer Only)
  • Setting: Tau Ceti IV, year 2893
  • Team: 300+ developers

Gameplay: Extract or Lose Everything

Marathon follows the extraction shooter model: deploy into a shared environment, gather resources and gear, and escape before you're killed. Each match supports up to 6 teams of 3 players, with solo and duo options also available.

The key is the risk-reward mechanic: items are permanently lost on failed extraction. Every decision carries weight — do you push for one more loot crate or run for the extraction point? This tension is reminiscent of Escape from Tarkov, but wrapped in sci-fi aesthetics and Bungie's signature gunplay.

6 Teams of 3

Up to 18 players per match. Cooperation or betrayal — every encounter is unpredictable. Solo and duo modes also available.

Permanent Loss

Failed extraction means permanent item loss. Every deployment is a stake — there's no safety net.

Cross-Play & Cross-Save

Full cross-play between PS5, PC, and Xbox. Cross-save allows seamless continuation on any platform.

Cybernetic Runners

Runners are cybernetically enhanced humans with unique abilities. Each Runner fundamentally changes your playstyle.

The Setting: Tau Ceti IV, 2893

The action takes place on the planet Tau Ceti IV, in the distant future of 2893. Players, as “Runners,” are cybernetically enhanced humans exploring the ruins of a collapsed civilization. Bungie's sci-fi world-building is rich and atmospheric, drawing from the original Marathon trilogy but taking an entirely new direction.

Oscar winner Alberto Mielgo directed the game's narrative trailer, giving Marathon a visual identity that sets it apart from every other shooter on the market. The voice cast includes actors such as Roger Clark (Arthur Morgan, RDR2), Ben Starr (Clive, FF16), and Neil Newbon (Astarion, BG3).

"Marathon is not meant to replace Destiny 2. It's a completely different game for a different audience. We want to show what else Bungie can do."
— Joe Ziegler, Game Director

A Troubled Journey

Marathon's path to release was far from smooth. The original launch date was September 23, 2025, but after a disappointing closed alpha, Bungie made the difficult decision to delay the launch to March 5, 2026.

The alpha feedback was clear: the gunplay needed work, matchmaking had issues, and the content was insufficient. Bungie used the extra 6 months for radical improvements — a move reminiscent of Destiny 1's delay years ago.

The Antireal Controversy

In November 2025, digital artist Antireal alleged that some Marathon concept art used elements from their work without permission. The case caused significant backlash on social media, with many questioning Bungie's integrity.

The matter was resolved in December 2025. Bungie acknowledged the issue, removed the contested assets, and conducted an internal investigation into their sourcing processes. The incident left a mark, but the swift response prevented greater damage.

Voice Cast and Creative Team

Bungie invested heavily in voice acting. The cast includes some of the most recognized names in gaming:

  • Roger Clark — Known as Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2
  • Ben Starr — Clive from Final Fantasy XVI
  • Neil Newbon — Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3

Alberto Mielgo, Oscar winner for “The Windshield Wiper,” directed the narrative trailer, giving Marathon a visual identity that transcends typical gaming trailers.

Why You Should Pay Attention

Marathon is a bold bet. Bungie is risking its reputation in a new genre with competition from Tarkov, Hunt: Showdown, and The Cycle. The disappointing alpha and delay raised concerns, but Bungie has proven in the past that it can bounce back.

With cross-play across all platforms, an all-star voice cast, Alberto Mielgo's direction, and 30 years of franchise legacy, Marathon has all the tools to become one of the most compelling titles of 2026. The March 5 premiere will reveal whether Bungie can redefine itself once again.
