The Legacy of Dragon Quest VII

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past launched on August 26, 2000 in Japan and caused a seismic impact. With 3.57 million copies sold in 17 days, it became the best-selling PlayStation game in Japan, and analysts predicted it would generate a 50 billion yen economic impact on the Japanese economy. Created by the legendary Yuji Horii, with character designs by Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama, DQ7 offered 100+ hours of gameplay through a unique time-travel mechanic.

The concept was revolutionary: instead of exploring a vast world, you start on a tiny island — Estard — and travel to the past by placing stone shards into ancient pedestals. Every continent you save reappears in the present, gradually building the world from nothing. It was an experience that demanded patience but rewarded players with one of the most captivating stories in JRPG history.

DQ7 by the Numbers

The original DQ7 won the Grand Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival 2000, four CESA awards (including Best Prize and Scenario Prize), and was voted the 9th best game of all time by Famitsu readers (2006). The 3DS remake in 2013 sold 800,000+ copies on its first weekend alone.

Reimagined: What Changes in 2026

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is neither a remaster nor a simple port. Producer Takeshi Ichikawa described it as “re-built from the ground up” — and it shows in every aspect of the game. HexaDrive used CryEngine to create a world with diorama-style visuals — environments that look like handcrafted miniatures, delivering a completely different aesthetic from the HD-2D approach most expected.

Diorama Visuals

Environments built like handcrafted dioramas, with warm colors and details that breathe life into the world of Estard.

Dual-Class: Moonlight

The new system allows each character to belong to two classes simultaneously, opening up enormous strategic possibilities.

Full Voice Acting

Complete Japanese and English voice acting featuring actors like Mamoru Miyano (Kiefer) and Aoi Yūki (Maribel).

Improved Pacing

The story has been streamlined for better rhythm and accessibility, without losing the essence of the adventure.

The Class System Evolves

The class system has always been the heart of DQ7. In the original, players reached Dharma Island and could choose from classes like Warrior, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Bard, Dancer, Pirate, and many more, across three tiers (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced). Characters leveled up each class through battles, learning new spells and skills, until they “mastered” the class at level 8.

In Reimagined, HexaDrive added the "Moonlight" system: each character can now belong to two classes simultaneously, offering additional flexibility and strategic depth. Additionally, "Vocational Perks" were introduced — unique benefits for each class that reward specialization. The old monster classes were replaced by a single advanced class called Monster Master, streamlining a system many considered overly complex.

"We wanted to take on a new challenge. It's not enough to put HD graphics on a classic game — you need to reimagine it entirely."
— Takeshi Ichikawa, Producer, Square Enix

The Heroes of Estard Find Their Voice

One of the biggest changes is the addition of full voice acting. The Hero (named Auster in English) is voiced by Kouki Osuzu (Japanese) and Isaac Rouse (English). Prince Kiefer is voiced by Mamoru Miyano — famous for Death Note, Steins;Gate, and dozens of anime. Maribel is voiced by Aoi Yūki (Madoka Magica, Sword Art Online).

Furthermore, Reimagined introduces a significant story change: Kiefer briefly rejoins the party to participate in the final battle against Orgodemir — a moment fans of the original had been dreaming about for 25 years. This addition shows HexaDrive didn't just translate the original but reexamined it in depth.

The Story: Time Travel That Reshapes Worlds

DQ7 always had a unique approach to storytelling. The hero starts on the small island of Estard — the only land in an endless ocean. Through ancient ruins and stone shards, he travels to the past to save continents that were erased by the Demon Lord Orgodemir. Every continent saved reappears on the modern map, literally building the world piece by piece.

In Reimagined, the story remains the same at its core, but the pacing has been significantly improved. The original was criticized for its extremely slow opening hours. The streamlined scenario allows newcomers to get into the action faster, while veterans enjoy the quality-of-life improvements.

Release Platforms

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launched on February 5, 2026 across five platforms: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. A free demo was available from January 7, 2026, letting everyone try before they buy.

Is It Worth It?

With a 92% recommend rate on OpenCritic, Reimagined didn't disappoint. The diorama visuals give the game a warm, storybook atmosphere that perfectly suits Toriyama's designs. The dual-class system adds strategic depth without alienating newcomers, and the voice acting breathes life into characters who spent 25 years in silence.

If you're a JRPG fan, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is one of the best remakes ever released. If you've never played Dragon Quest, there's no better entry point than this. HexaDrive proved that a remake can be something far more than a graphical upgrade — it can be a complete reinvention.
