What Is the Volvo EX30?
The Volvo EX30 is a subcompact electric crossover SUV — the smallest model in Volvo's lineup. It was unveiled in June 2023 and quickly earned awards such as World Urban Car 2024, Carwow Car of the Year 2024, and the Red Dot Best of the Best Design Award.
It's built on Geely's SEA2 platform (sharing its base with the Smart #1 and Zeekr X) and is manufactured in China and Belgium (Ghent factory). At just 4,233 mm in length, it's ideal for European cities.
According to Volvo, the EX30 has the smallest carbon footprint of any Volvo in history — just 30 tonnes of CO2 over 200,000 km. It uses 25% recycled aluminium, 17% recycled steel, and upholstery made from old denim!

Things to Watch Out For
- Small size: If you need a family SUV, it's probably too tight — consider the Tesla Model Y or BYD Seal U
- Cargo space: Quite small for a compact SUV
- Minimalist interior: Only one 12.3″ central screen — there's no separate instrument cluster
- No CarPlay/Android Auto: Relies exclusively on Google built-in (update: it now supports both)
- 2026 battery recall: In some markets a recall was issued regarding battery overheating — check if it applies to your market
Verdict
The Volvo EX30 is proof that a small electric car can be premium, fast, safe, and sustainable. If you don't need a lot of space, it's arguably the best EV under €35,000. Volvo has managed to deliver Scandinavian quality at an affordable price.

Competition in this segment is fierce: the BYD Atto 3 offers more space at a lower price, the MINI Countryman SE targets the same premium crowd, and the smart #1 is even more compact. But none combine Volvo’s safety credentials, sustainability commitment (25% recycled aluminium, 17% recycled plastics), and that distinctive Scandinavian minimalism.
