What Is the Model Y Juniper?
The Tesla Model Y “Juniper” is the most significant mid-cycle refresh of the world's most popular electric car. Internally codenamed “Juniper,” it initially launched in China in January 2025 before arriving in Europe and Greece.

The original Model Y launched in 2020 and quickly became the best-selling electric car worldwide. With Juniper, Tesla isn't just doing a facelift — it's changing nearly everything: new exterior design, larger battery, improved sound insulation, a new rear passenger display, and for the first time, an optional third row of seats.
Let's take a detailed look at what's changed and whether it's worth buying or upgrading.
New Design: Light Bar & Clean Lines
The most visible change is on the exterior. The Juniper Model Y features:
- LED light bar spanning the full width at the front, similar to the refreshed Model 3 Highland
- New headlights with a slimmer design
- Redesigned rear bumper with new lighting elements
- Improved aerodynamics with a lower Cd
- New wheels designed for lower air resistance
The result is a car that looks distinctly more modern and premium, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Tesla Model Y.
Interior: A Premium Upgrade
The interior receives the most significant upgrades. Tesla appears to have listened to criticism about “basic” materials and responded:
Displays
- 15.4″ center display (up from 15″)
- 8″ rear passenger display
- New graphics and UI
Seats & Comfort
- Ventilated seats
- Ambient lighting
- Improved sound insulation
- New upgraded materials
New Feature: 3rd Row
- Optional 3rd row of seats
- 7-seat configuration
- Ideal for large families
Tip
The 3rd row of seats costs approximately $2,500 extra. If you have a large family, it's an excellent alternative to the much more expensive Tesla Model X.
Versions & Technical Specifications
The Juniper Model Y is available in 4 versions, all with a larger 80 kWh battery (up from 75 kWh):
| Version | Drivetrain | Range | 0-100 | EU Price* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard RWD | Rear | ~517 km | ~6.3s | ~€40.000 |
| Long Range RWD | Rear | ~575 km | 5.1s | ~€45.000 |
| Long Range AWD | 4x4 | ~533 km | 3.9s | ~€50.000 |
| Performance | 4x4 | ~497 km | 3.5s | ~€57.500 |
* Indicative prices based on European markets. Greek prices may vary due to taxation. The Standard RWD may qualify for the “Kinoume Ilektrika” (Move Electric) subsidy program.
Charging: 250 kW DC Fast Charging
Charging is an area where the Juniper improves significantly:
- DC Fast Charging: Up to 250 kW (Tesla Supercharger V3/V4)
- Onboard AC Charger: 11.5 kW (for home/public AC charging)
- 10-80% in: Approximately 25-30 minutes at Supercharger V3
- Supercharger network: 60,000+ stations worldwide, 50+ in Greece
Bidirectional Charging: V2H & V2L
The Performance version supports bidirectional charging, enabling Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L). This means you can use the car's battery to power your home or electrical devices — ideal for blackouts or camping.
Model Y+ in China: 821 km Range!
It's worth mentioning that a special version, the Model Y+, launched in China with next-generation LG batteries. This version achieves an impressive range of 510 miles (821 km) according to the Chinese CLTC standard.
While this range isn't directly comparable to European WLTP figures (CLTC always produces higher numbers), it demonstrates the platform's potential. It's possible that we'll see versions with range close to 700 km WLTP in Europe in the future.
Autopilot & Full Self-Driving
The Juniper comes with upgraded hardware for autonomous driving. The highlights:
- Tesla Vision: Camera-only (no radar or lidar)
- Enhanced Autopilot: Included in Premium versions
- Full Self-Driving (FSD): Optional, not yet available in Europe with full capabilities
- New cameras: Improved resolution and field of view
Important
In Europe, FSD has not yet been approved at the same level as in the USA. Enhanced Autopilot works excellently on highways, but the driver must always remain in control.
How Does It Compare to the Competition?
| Model Y LR | Hyundai Ioniq 5 | BMW iX3 NK | |
|---|---|---|---|
| WLTP Range | ~575 km | ~507 km | ~600 km |
| DC Charging | 250 kW | 240 kW | ~270 kW |
| Supercharger Network | ✅ 60.000+ | ❌ Third-party | ❌ Third-party |
| OTA Updates | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐ | ⭐⭐⭐⭐ |
| Price (est.) | ~€45.000 | ~€47.000 | ~€55.000 |
The Model Y maintains two significant advantages: the Supercharger network (unmatched in coverage and reliability) and OTA updates that continuously improve the car after purchase.
Reliability: A Question Mark
We should also mention the negatives. In the German TÜV report, the Model Y shows some reliability issues, especially in older production models. The most common problems:
- Build quality (panel gaps) — improved in Juniper
- Suspension issues in high-mileage models
- Some reports of paint problems
However, Tesla has dramatically improved build quality in recent models, and the Juniper — especially the Giga Berlin models — appears to overcome most of these issues.
Is It Worth Buying?
Let's break it down:
Pros
- Class-leading range
- Supercharger network
- Excellent Autopilot
- OTA updates
- Resale value
- Premium interior (now)
Cons
- Higher price than Chinese competitors
- Minimalist interior (not for everyone)
- FSD limited in Europe
- TÜV reliability questions
Verdict
The Tesla Model Y Juniper 2026 is the most complete version of the world's most popular electric SUV. With 575+ km range, 80 kWh battery, 250 kW charging, and a significantly upgraded interior, it justifies its price. If you're looking for an electric SUV in the €40,000–€55,000 range, it remains the safest choice.
