The Return of a Legend

The original Renault 5 launched in 1972 and sold over 5 million units. It was the car that democratized motoring in Europe. Now, 50+ years later, Renault brings back the iconic model — this time fully electric.

And the comeback was triumphant: European Car of the Year 2025, Top Gear Car of the Year 2024, and a total of 44 international awards — making it the most awarded Renault in history. The most impressive part? 84% of buyers had never owned a Renault before.

Fun Fact

The charging port is located on the hood — designed to resemble the air intake of the original R5! When fully charged, a glowing "5″ appears on the gauge. And yes, the headlights “wink” at the driver when you approach!

Important

The Urban Range (40 kWh) does not support DC fast charging! If you plan to travel long distances, choose the Comfort Range (52 kWh) which charges from 15-80% in ~30 minutes.

Design: Captivating Retro Style

The design is undoubtedly the biggest selling point. Renault managed to revive the cheerful, rounded silhouette of the original R5, but with a modern twist:

The interior uses 100% recycled fabrics — including upholstery made from recycled denim on the techno+ and higher trims.

Technology & EESM Motor

An interesting technical detail: the 6AM motor is an EESM (Externally Excited Synchronous Motor). This means it requires no rare earths, which reduces both cost and environmental impact.

On the infotainment side:

Who Is It For?

The Renault 5 E-Tech isn't for everyone — but for the right buyer, it's perfect:

Ideal if...

  • You live in a city
  • You want something with character
  • You're looking for an affordable EV
  • You don't travel long distances
  • You want Made in France

Not a good fit if...

  • You need space (277L trunk capacity)
  • You take frequent road trips
  • You want AWD or an SUV
  • You need a 7-seater

Verdict

The Renault 5 E-Tech is one of the most important electric cars released in recent years. It doesn't win on specs (the range is moderate), but it wins on character, price, and emotion. If you're looking for a city EV with soul — this is it. If Renault manages to price it under €27,000, it will become a best-seller.
