What Is Neue Klasse?

Neue Klasse (New Class) is BMW's brand-new architectural platform designed from scratch exclusively for electric vehicles. Unlike the current i4 and iX models that are based on platforms originally designed for internal combustion engines, the Neue Klasse starts from a clean sheet.

BMW promises a "technological quantum leap" with this new platform. The first Neue Klasse models already rolled off the production line at the factory in Hungary in November 2024, and the lineup begins with the iX3 SUV before expanding to the i3 sedan that we're interested in here.

The name “Neue Klasse” is no coincidence — it references BMW's legendary models from the 1960s that laid the foundation for the modern BMW. The company wants to signal that this is a new chapter, equally important as that one.

Did You Know?

BMW holds over 1,000 patents related to electric vehicle technologies. Neue Klasse represents a multi-billion euro investment in electrification.

Gen6 Battery: A Revolution in Energy Storage

The heart of Neue Klasse is the new generation of Gen6 battery cells. According to BMW, these cells will offer 30% greater range compared to the current Gen5, 30% faster charging, and significantly lower production costs.

The Gen6 cells use a cylindrical format instead of the prismatic ones BMW currently uses. This change, similar to what Tesla did with the 4680 cells, allows better thermal management and higher energy density.

Gen5 (Current)

  • Prismatic cells
  • ~450 km range
  • DC charging ~200 kW
  • Higher cost

Gen6 (Neue Klasse)

  • Cylindrical cells
  • 600+ km range
  • DC charging ~270+ kW
  • 30% lower cost

BMW states that the new battery will be able to store significantly more energy in the same space, which combined with the lower weight and improved aerodynamic design, ensures a range exceeding 600 kilometers.

Design: A New Design Language

The BMW i3 Neue Klasse inaugurates a new design philosophy. The most striking element is the evolution of the iconic “kidney grille” — on the Neue Klasse electric models it takes on a more closed, digital form, integrating lighting elements and sensors.

The first concept images show a sedan with clean lines, minimal creases on the bodywork, and a very low drag coefficient (Cd). The silhouette remains recognizably BMW — low, sporty, with a long hood — but with a futuristic aura.

Inside, BMW adopts a minimalist approach. A panoramic iDrive display extends across the full width of the dashboard, while the new-generation Head-Up Display projects information onto a large portion of the windshield. Physical buttons exist only for the most essential functions.

Technical Specifications & Versions

Although BMW has not announced full technical details, based on leaks and executive statements, we can outline the expected specifications:

Specificationi3 eDrive40i3 xDrive50
DrivetrainRear (RWD)All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
Power (est.)~340 hp~455 hp
WLTP Range~620 km~580 km
0-100 km/h~5.5 sec~4.0 sec

Note

The above specifications are based on leaks and estimates. Final specs will be officially announced by BMW at launch. According to BMW, Neue Klasse models will offer 30% better range than their current counterparts.

BMW i3 M Performance: The Electric M3

According to reliable sources, BMW is planning an M Performance version of the electric i3, which will essentially be the spiritual successor to the legendary M3. Particularly interesting is that BMW has stated the electric M3 will feature a synthetic V10 sound to create a more thrilling driving experience.

The M Performance version is expected to exceed 500 horsepower, with all-wheel drive, adaptive suspension, and a 0-100 time of under 3.5 seconds. If that sounds incredible, it's worth remembering that the current BMW i4 M50 already does 0-100 in 3.9 seconds.

Prices & When It Arrives in Greece

The BMW i3 Neue Klasse is expected to launch in Europe in 2026, after the iX3 SUV which will be the first Neue Klasse model. Production takes place at the new factory in Debrecen, Hungary, which means availability in the European market will be relatively quick.

Competition: How Does It Compare?

The BMW i3 Neue Klasse will compete against the best electric sedans in its class. Let's see how it stacks up:

0-100 km/h~5.5s5.1s5.9s
Price (est.)~€48.000~€39.000~€35.000

The BMW i3 will be more expensive, but it offers something competitors struggle to replicate: the BMW driving experience. Rear-wheel drive, perfect 50:50 weight distribution, and the M division's reputation remain strong advantages.

Is It Worth the Wait?

If you're looking for a premium electric sedan and you're in no rush, the BMW i3 Neue Klasse is definitely worth the wait. The new platform promises significant improvements in every area — range, charging, technology, driving dynamics.

However, if you need a car now, the current BMW i4 remains an excellent choice, while the Tesla Model 3 Highland and the BYD Seal offer exceptional value at a lower cost.

Verdict

The BMW i3 Neue Klasse could prove to be the most important BMW of the last decade. With Gen6 batteries, 600+ km range, and an entirely new platform, the German company enters the electrification era with serious ambitions. If the price remains competitive (under €50,000 for the base version), the i3 will put up a tough fight against the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal.
